AMY SPENCER - BOTANICAL ARTIST
Amy Spencer is a botanical artist who uses nature as her primary medium. Her favorite pieces to work
with are the forgotten and overlooked things of nature - like wildflowers and weeds. Her goal is
to inspire wonder in the everyday and beauty in the unexpected.
THE WONDER COLLECTION - “THE BLUES”
The pieces that I used to create this botanical art collection are what most people would call weeds. I think the world is too quick to discard things or people that don’t fit into a neat category. When I thought about the larger meaning of this collection and the message that I hope my art communicates, “WONDER” was the word that came to mind. Wonder by definition is a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected or unfamiliar. It’s the revelation of seeing the same thing a new way. This collection seeks to capture the unexpected beauty and value of humble things.
Four years ago, our family adopted through the foster care system and we were forever changed by our experience. When I thought about what this collection means and what it symbolizes it felt like a perfect fit with my heart to create awareness for forgotten children. For this reason, I am donating some of the proceeds from this collection to an organization called “ The Forgotten Initiative” The Forgotten Initiative helps provide on-ramps for private organizations such as churches, etc. to partner with foster care system. They seek to provide awareness and hope.
I believe what Van Gogh said is true, “There is nothing more truly artistic than loving people.”
