Art Series - Part III
In the third installment of this series, I wanted to talk about the most common mistakes that people make when they hang art in their home and a few rules of thumb to guide you as you pick up the hammer.
Instead of writing a longer explanation, I decided to just upload a quick video. It’s unedited so don’t mind the sound of my boys coming in and out of the back door, and me giving myself a pep talk not to be too long winded about a minute in. (My Dad is a Baptist pastor, long windedness is in my genes.)
I’m going to list a few of the tips I mentioned here so you can refer to them without having to go back and find them in the video.
- Most things should be hung at eye level…. So, roughly 57” from the floor to the center of the piece of art. A few exceptions to this are over the fireplace, up the staircase, or over a taller piece of furniture like a buffet, etc.
- When you are hanging art over furniture, you want to center it roughly 8” - 10” above the top of the table, sofa, etc. Everything in a room should relate, so you want to make sure that what you hang relates to the furniture that is in the room, meaning that it doesn’t feel disconnected by being too far away, uncentered, etc
-Make sure that you have big enough pieces to cover the space adequately. Every room should have a variety of pieces. One larger piece, or a pair that makes a larger statement, and several smaller pieces. What might seem big online or in the store, will be quickly swallowed up in a home that has 9-10 foot ceilings and expansive walls.
Hanging and grouping is sort of an art in and of itself - don’t be afraid to make a few mistakes, that’s what spackle and paint are for.:) If you need help feel free to contact me, and if you are looking to add art collection this Christmas don’t forget to check out my shop.
Happy Hanging,
