Art Series - Part l

my thoughts on why art is an important part of your home

The word art can denote lots of different things. Lots of us go straight to the historical meaning when we hear the word.   We think of pedigreed pieces that are widely appreciated but most of us could never afford - Picasso, Matisse, Rembrandt, Homer to name a few.   Or maybe you think of the canvas pieces you see on the left side of World Market or in the middle of Hobby Lobby.  Neither of these are  wrong, there is just a large gap full of other possibilities in the middle of these two extremes.  Art can be a collection of postcards from places you’ve visited, it can be candid photographs, it can even be a special collection of plates. The most important thing should be that you feel a connection to it.

So many people feel intimidated by the idea of buying and hanging art in their own home.  Most just aren’t sure where to start or what they even like.  Throw in the fact that it costs money and you have a recipe for inertia.

Your home should be full of things that remind you of places you’ve gone, things you’ve done, what you love, who you are, what you believe and what you could become.  A shelter in more than just the physical sense of the word.  A place not only to rest, but to recharge.

Art is one of the best ways to personalize your home. It has a big impact in how our space feels and how we feel in the space.  Although to many it’s commonly an afterthought, it plays a quiet, but important role in our everyday lives.  Since the majority of our hours in the day are spent at home, it’s most definitely worth the time and investment...large or small.

If you are looking to buy a piece of art that would require more of an investment, it might be wise to seek the help of an interior designer.  They can help make sure that scale and tone are in line with the overall feel of the room.   If you are reluctant or don’t know where to start, I’ve got lots of great tips for you in part 2 of this series.

Also, check out the shop for versatile and meaningful pieces to add to your collection. I love doing custom botanical pieces as well, and we can even source clippings that come straight from your yard.

Now begins your mission - no more bare walls.:)
